Home Minister Rajnath Singh said the situation in Gujarat is under control and the Centre is monitoring it closely. “It is being handled at the state level and the chief minister is trying to resolve the issue,” Rajnath told The Indian Express. “I am in touch with the chief minister and the Centre is monitoring the situation.”
The Army has been deployed in more cities after nine people, including a policeman, died in the violence. Sources in the BJP admitted state intelligence had failed to get the “right information” on the scale of the agitation. “Initial information was there would be a few thousand, so there was no preparation to handle the lakhs who turned out,” said a party leader. BJP leaders are also worried about the threat of an agitation by Jats in Haryana, another party-ruled state.
