Gujarat honours Mansa farmer with cash award

The Gujarat government has honoured Balbir Singh — a small farmer from Burj Dhilwan village — with Rs 51,000 in a recent conference attended by farmers from across the country.

The Gujarat government has honoured Balbir Singh — a small farmer from Burj Dhilwan village — with Rs 51,000 in a recent conference attended by farmers from across the country.

Singh does organic farming in his 4 acres of land and sells his wheat produce at a rate of Rs 3,000 to 3,500 per quintal — more than double of the MSP.

Singh also does dairy farming with 25 cattle. “I use animals excreta with herbs to make manure. I also do beekeeping and prepare manure through vermiculture,which I am using in my land. I do not use chemicals.” With guidance from Agriculture Officer Dr J S Brar,he has started sugarcane and ladyfinger farming.

Dr Paramjeet Singh Dhatt,Mansa Chief Agriculture Officer said: “We have sent Singh’s a documentary on him to the Gujarat government. He and a few other farmers were taken to Gujarat for the conference that was held from September 7 to 12… Singh can be a guiding force for other small farmers.”
