Granville Austin, Constitution scholar, dies

Prof Austin was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2011.

Granville Austin, author of two celebrated political histories of the Indian Constitution, passed away in Washington DC on Sunday, media reports said. He was 87.

Prof Austin’s The Indian Constitution: Cornerstone of a Nation, first published in 1966, is a masterful analysis of debates in the Constituent Assembly, and an enduring classic. In 1999, he published Working a Democratic Constitution: The Indian Experience, an account of four decades of the working of the Constitution. Prof Austin was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2011.

According to his web site, Austin, who earned a doctorate in Modern Indian History from Oxford University, worked as a journalist/photographer and later served with the US Information Service, Department of State, Department of Health, Education and Welfare, and on the staff of a US senator.
