Govt has no intent to give us time to debate crucial issues: Jakhar

Since it is the government, which called the special session over wealth tax, which now stands withdrawn,we asked the Speaker time for raising various issues.

With the time allotted for the special Punjab Assembly session on May 3 curtailed on account of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and others leaving city for Sarabjit Singh’s cremation,Leader of Opposition Sunil Jakhar on Thursday met Speaker Charanjit Atwal to demand time to debate issues and seek answers from the government.

“Since it is the government, which called the special session over wealth tax, which now stands withdrawn,we asked the Speaker time for raising various issues. But the Speaker told us that the time of the session would have to be limited as the CM has to go for the cremation of Sarabjit Singh. There are many more issues we want to have a debate on but there seems to be no intent to allow us the time to do so,” Jakhar said.

Seeking reciprocation for withdrawal of wealth tax on farmers by the Centre,Jakhar said the Badal government should withdraw property tax on urban areas and rollback the power tariff hike. “Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal had promised to gift Talwandi Sabo power plant at Baisakhi. He has been claiming that Punjab will be power surplus while power crisis and high tariffs have forced industries to either close down or leave the state. We want answers from the government on the hullbaloo on making Punjab power surplus and at what cost will this power come,” Jakhar told mediapersons.

In a meeting of the Congress Legislative Party held on Thursday, the party decided to probe CAG findings. “The CAG has pointed out that nearly Rs 3,200 crore were reappropriated in last two days of March in 2011-12,out of various heads. Where has that money gone? We do not want to make allegations without a probe. We want to demand an independent inquiry either by a legislative committee or by CAG by calling more records,as the CAG has said the state department did not reply to its letters in this regard,” Jakhar said.

The other issues the party decided to raise was the arrest of 50 teachers while demanding pay arrears.

“They are to be paid under centrally-sponsored schemes. How can they survive without pay? Also, protesting linemen are beaten up during every function of the CM and described as agents of the Congress. It does not become of the CM to do so,” he said.
