Governor has every right to ask Centre for forces: Ashok Ganguly

“I don’t think the Governor is running any parallel government, as the CM had alleged. He is the head of the state and has every right to write to the Centre, seeking central forces for the upcoming civic polls,” Ganguly said.

A day after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused the Centre of running a parallel government in states through governors, and creating a communal charged atmosphere, Justice (retd) Ashok Ganguly on Thursday termed the comments as disappointing.

Mamata had said so at a chief ministers’ conclave on cooperative federalism organised by the Delhi government, while referring to Governor Kesari Nath Tripathi seeking central forces for municipal polls.

“I don’t think the Governor is running any parallel government, as the CM had alleged. He is the head of the state and has every right to write to the Centre, seeking central forces for the upcoming civic polls,” Ganguly said at an event of Save Democracy Forum.

He added that while the ruling Trinamool has given rise to lawlessness, repeated complaints to the state election commission had failed to produce any desirable result. “Now, the solution is up to the common people. We urge people not to sit at home but to go in groups to polling stations and cast their votes. If common people could change the 34-year misrule of the Left, they will easily be able to change the current scenario,” Ganguly said.

Claiming that it was the duty of the ruling party to ensure that there was a free and fair polls, he added: “The ruling party is not doing its duty. In fact, it is creating an atmosphere of intimidation with the help of anti-social elements so that people are unable to vote.”

Ganguly claimed he will meet the state election commissioner soon to appeal to him that all steps are taken to ensure peaceful and fair elections. “I will urge him to exercise his power without any bias, stop infiltration of outsiders and issue orders to mobilise police forces to flush them out…,” he said.
