Bookie Shobhan Mehta,arrested by Mumbai Crime Branch Friday,has reportedly told police that casinos in Goa are favoured by bookies for gambling operations.
Officers said casinos serve as the perfect cover as every customer spends large amounts of money. Bookies also take advantage of additional services offered for high-value patrons,police said. Investigations also point to the presence of ‘agents or middlemen at casinos.
Mehta was picked up from a casino in Goa and brought to Mumbai Friday. He has been remanded in police custody till July 12.
Immediately after reaching Goa on June 28,Mehta went to a casino. It arranged for accommodation at a posh hotel and hired a car. Mehta ensured he got minimum visibility, said an officer.
Police found that immediately after the IPL betting racket was busted,Mehta flew to Bangkok and Singapore with his family and stayed there till June 21. On June 22,Mehta landed in Mumbai but did not go to his Parel residence. He knew he was wanted in the case and left for Goa on June 28, the officer said.
