The Aizawl bench of the Gauhati High Court on Thursday granted interim bail to Lai Autonomous District’s chief executive V Zirsanga and several others in a Rs 1.5 crore graft case.

The Aizawl District Court had on Wednesday rejected anticipatory bail pleas filed before it by the accused and cancelled the interim bails it had earlier granted to them, citing the investigating agency’s submission that prosecution witnesses were turning hostile or were becoming less enthusiastic.

The Gauhati HC’s Aizawl bench however granted the accused interim bail and set August 4 for further hearing, according to their lawyer B Lalramenga.

The bench however asked the accused to furnish bail bonds of Rs 50,000 and ordered them to not leave Lawngtlai town in southern Mizoram, where they live and where the alleged scam took place.

The Lai Autononous District Council’s Chief Executive Member V Zirsanga, a Congress politician and several others including the District Education Officer, a high school teacher attached as cashier to his office and two teachers who head a teachers’ body there are accused of illegally amassing about Rs 1.5 crore from the education scam.

According to the Anti-Corruption Bureau, they did this by issuing fake pay certificates for 41 teachers, drawing salaries of some teachers more than once while apparently pocketing the salaries of several others.
