Five of family killed as car plunges in well in Morbi

Morbi taluka police have registered a case of accidental deaths and have started further investigation.

Five persons of a family were killed when the car they were travelling in fell into an open well near Nichi Mandal village in Morbi district in the wee hours of Monday.

Two others, also travelling in the same vehicle, had a miraculous escape.

The accident took place at around 3 am when notary Sanjaysinh Jhala was returning home in Pipali village in Morbi taluka with his family after attending a marriage ceremony in Dhumana village of Dhragandhra taluka in neighbouring Surendranagar district. The incident took place near Nichi Mandal village, some 15 kilometres east of Morbi on Morbi-Halwad state highway, police said.

“Sanjaysinh dozed off for a short while due to drowsiness while drivingand lost control of the vehicle. The Alto car fell into a well killing five of the seven on the spot. However, the advocate and his niece Shilpaba Pratapsinh Sarvaiya (14) survived as they managed to come out of the car through the opening created after its windscreen was shattered,” Morbi taluka polices sub-inspector Prakash Dekavadiya said.

The advocate helped his niece claw her way out of the well. Then, she went on the highway and sought help from a truck-driver. By the time help reached, five others in the car drowned, police said. The victims were identified as Sanjaysinh’s wife Alka (40), daughter Sonal (15), son Kripalsinh (14), niece Jagruti (13) and Shilpa’s mother Geeta Pratapsinh Sarvaiya (42).

“After the driver helped Sanjaysinh climb his way out of the well, the advocate dialed emergency number 100 and sought police help. But firefighters could only fish out bodies of the five,” Dekavadiya said.

Meanwhile, two men were killed when a truck and a pickup truck collided head-on near Sidsar village on Talaja-Bhavnagar state highway in Bhavnagar district late Sunday night.

The victims were identified as Ravisinh Androle, a resident of Chitra area in Bhavnagar city and one Amitsinh.

While Androle died on the spot, Amitsinh succumbed to injuries during treatment in hospital, Vartej police said.

The accident took place at around 11 pm on Sunday when Androle, his brother Nepalsinh and Amitsinh were on their way back to Bhavnagar from Talaja in their pickup truck, police further said.
