Twelve years after Amarmani Tripathi, a former UP minister, was arrested and later handed a life term for the murder of a poet with whom he allegedly had an affair, his son Amanmani too has landed behind bars.

Wanted in a kidnapping and extortion case lodged against him in Lucknow last year, Amanmani was sent to judicial custody Friday, a day after he emerged unscathed from a car accident in which his wife Sara, a 27-year-old law graduate, died. Police said no witness has stepped forward so far.

Suspecting foul play and questioning the accident account, Sara’s family said Friday they will seek a CBI probe if the UP police fail to investigate the Thursday afternoon accident on the National Highway near Firozabad.

She was the niece of IAS officer S K Raghuvanshi, currently posted as Secretary, Home, Civil Aviation and Vigilance, Uttar Pradesh.
Sara’s mother Seema Singh said: “We want a thorough investigation by police into the accident. I fail to understand how one person travelling in the same car can get killed while the other person escapes unhurt.”

She said Amanmani married Sara against the wishes of his parents at an Arya Samaj temple in July 2013. But Sara lived with her at their house in Gomti Nagar, Lucknow most of the time.

“Amarmani and his wife had been against the marriage. They were not ready to accept it,” Seema Singh said. She said her family too did not attend the wedding at the temple but later accepted the couple.

Amarmani, convicted along with wife Madhumani in the murder case of poet Madhumita Shukla, is admitted in a hospital in Gorakhpur under judicial custody.

Amarmani was arrested in September 2003 in connection with the murder of Shukla with whom he allegedly had an affair.

She was murdered in May 2003. Her post-mortem report stated she was carrying a foetus. A DNA test matched it with Amarmani who was sentenced in 2007.

According to Seema Singh, Sara left with Amanmani on Thursday morning saying they were driving to Delhi and then to Shimla and Manali.

“About five hours later, I got a call from her mobile phone that she had met with an accident. Amanmani had called from her phone,” she said.

Sara’s elder sister Neeti said: “I was in Mumbai. I called Sara on her phone and Aman answered. He said he had carried her to the Firozabad district hospital where doctors said she was dead. He said the accident took place when he tried to avoid a woman crossing the road. But later, he told my brother that it happened because he tried to avoid a man on a bicycle. We want an inquiry to establish the exact circumstances of her death.”

“She did not tell us much about their relationship. But it is obvious that she was having to live with her mother even after marriage. We used to interact with Aman occasionally before the case (of kidnapping) was lodged,” Neeti said.

Firozabad SP Piyush Srivastava said Sara’s autopsy cited “ante-mortem injury” as cause of death, but only an investigation could find out if the injuries were the result of an accident or by any other cause. He said he had not received any complaint or request for an investigation.

Srivastava said a team of forensic experts from Agra visited the accident site on Friday. “They will give their report in two-three days after which we will be able to say anything further,” he said.

Shikohabad Circle Officer Shyamkant said the first information was that the car fell by the roadside in the Sirsaganj area of Firozabad. “It was raining at the time of the accident and there were people present after the accident. But no one is coming forward claiming to be an eyewitness to the accident,” he said.

Amanmani, who had been absconding in a case of kidnapping and extortion lodged against him last August at Gautampalli police station in Lucknow, was sent to jail on Friday after a Lucknow court rejected his bail plea. Last month, police had served a proclamation order at his house, declaring him an absconder.

Before being sent to jail, Amanmani was brought to the Civil Hospital for a medical examination where he got into a scuffle with photographers. His associates had a scuffle with policemen. Police later arrested two persons for allegedly assaulting the photographers.
