The CBI has sought extension of the term of the Multi-Disciplinary Monitoring Agency probing the conspiracy behind former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination.

The CBI has sought extension of the term of the Multi-Disciplinary Monitoring Agency (MDMA) ¿ probing the conspiracy behind former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi¿s assassination.

The Government, according to the official sources, was yet to take a decision on extending its term which ended on May 31.

CBI sources said MDMA was still functional as it expected a post-facto approval from the government. The CBI heads the MDMA and officials from intelligence agencies, like IB,RAW and Revenue Intelligence were a part of the Agency.

The MDMA was set up by the BJP government in 1998 on the recommendations of the Jain Commission to further look into the leads that had come up.

The Commission had come across various leads, which included bank transactions of the LTTE¿s frontal outfits, before and after the assassination, and movement of arms meant for LTTE during that period.

The bank transactions included those in the now-defunct Bank of Credit and Commerce International.

The links of key accused Sivarasan ¿ who was found dead on the outskirts of Bangalore ¿ as well as the role of controversial Godman Chandraswami were also recommended for further investigation. According to sources,MDMA had also unearthed at least 50 bank transactions allegedly at the behest of Chandraswami.
