Former Mumbai police commissioner Dr Satyapal Singh, now a BJP MP from Baghpat in UP, on Tuesday mocked Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi while addressing a gathering at Dharavi where he was campaigning for his party’s candidate Divya Dhole for the October 15 Assembly polls.
“Rajiv Gandhi ke chore (son) ka naam malum hai?” he repeatedly asked the 200-strong crowd. A shrill voice from the audience replied “pappu”, while someone else said “Rahul”. Not satisfied, Singh egged on the crowd. “Chore ka naam kya hain? Pappu ya Rahul?” Singh asked the cheering crowd.
The BJP MP said that unlike the Congress and other parties like NCP and Shiv Sena, there was no “parivarwaad (dynasty)” in BJP. “It is only the BJP that gives an ordinary man a chance to become a leader. In NCP, Shiv Sena and Congress, only family members rise to the top,” he said.
Dhole, a resident of Andheri who left her job with a private firm to fight elections, said, “If we come to power, we will dump the Dharavi redevelopment plan and invite a review from people. We will also ensure that people of Dharavi participate in the new survey so that their needs are met.”
“Dharavi should not be promoted for slum tourism, but it should become an industrial belt,” she said.
