A 70-year-old retired official of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) was hacked to death on Monday night in his flat by a gang of four robbers, including a security guard of his apartment block, in Pai Layout in East Bangalore. The retired official’s wife was injured in the attack.
Rajappa Pillai, 70, a resident of a first-floor flat at at the four-storey Yurane apartment in the well-known Pai Layout, was a retired DRDO administrative officer and his injured wife Usha, 60, is a homemaker.
The incident occured at around 12:45am and an alert police patrol managed to nab one of the alleged killers while he was fleeing the apartment, police said.
Rajappa and his wife were sleeping when the robbers knocked on their door. Rajappa reportedly opened the door since the apartment’s security guard Arun was seen standing outside. When the door was opened, Arun and three others barged in and attacked Pillai with sharp weapons, police said. When Pillai’s wife woke up and heard her husband screaming, she rushed to the living room and was attacked.
The gang subsequently entered the bedroom and took away Rs 3 lakh in cash and gold jewellery weighing 250 gm. Usha, meanwhile, crawled to a balcony and screamed for help, alerting the police patrol.
The cash amount was recovered when the police team nabbed one of the attackers, police said. The security guard Arun had begun working at the apartment block only 15 days ago. “The miscreants broke open an almirah and fled with gold jewellery weighing 250 grams and Rs 3 lakh in cash. We managed to nab one, we are searching for the other three including the security guard,” an investigating officer said.
Police sources said the main accused had been identified as Surendar Kadak of Nepal and added that the guard Arun was planted in the apartment block as part of a prior plan to carry out a robbery. Kadak had formed a gang to execute the plan, police said.
Rajappa is survived by his wife and two children – a son working in Saudi Arabia and a daughter who lives with her husband in Bangalore.
