Ex-CJI Verma deserved Padma Vibhushan: Sachar

“Padma awards have been announced for this year.

Former Delhi High Court Chief Justice Rajindar Sachar (retd) Thursday criticised the Centre for belittling former Chief Justice of India J S Verma by choosing him for the Padma Bhushan and not the Padma Vibhushan.

“Padma awards have been announced for this year. Normally I have nothing to say about them, as I believe these awards are an anomaly and ill befits our Republican Constitution — that is why I refused it years back. But a serious insensitivity shown by the selectors has caused great concern. I find that Justice Verma has been posthumously given Padma Bhushan — he eminently deserved the award — but the least should have been Padma Vibhushan. But the insensitivity of bureaucracy is legion,” the jurist said in a statement.

Pointing out that Justice Verma, who died last year, was respected for his contribution to the judiciary and society, Justice Sachar said that while the Padma Vibhushan has been given in the past to a few senior members of legal profession and some retired judges, in Justice Verma’s case, the matter was handled shoddily. “How come the selection panel did such a shoddy job in case of one of our most eminent judicial luminary. Bureaucracy has of course bungled. But can the supervising political authorities excuse themselves for this lack of sensitivity?” he asked.
