A class I student of Chanho in Ranchi district died due to suspected internal injuries Sunday, five days after being allegedly beaten up by his schoolteacher. Eight-year-old Sujit Munda, the eldest of three siblings, was a resident of Barhe village.

The police are waiting for his autopsy report before interrogating his teacher Mohammed Arshad Hussain. Hussain, who has been suspended by the district education superintendent pending an inquiry, teaches at the Government Upgraded Middle School in Ranchi’s Chanho block.

Police said Sujit’s father claimed that Hussain, also the headmaster-in-charge of the school, beat his son on January 28 for not doing homework. Hussain reportedly used a piece of firewood to thrash the boy. “Sujit complained of pain the same day. He was never taken to a hospital and passed away early Sunday ,” said Inspector at Chanho police station.

However, speaking to a Hindi daily, Hussain denied the allegations.
