DMK, AIADMK councillors scuffle over human skulls

It was the controversy surrounding the cremation of J Pappammal, 79, a woman from Trichy who died on July 8, that led to the fight between councillors. Pappammal was cremated at the Trichy crematorium.

DMK councillor T Muthu Selvam, who leads the opposition at the Trichy Municipal Corporation, raised two human skulls at the corporation meeting Tuesday, alleging that they were collected from partially-burnt bodies at the crematorium run by the corporation. Soon, AIADMK councillors surrounded him, leading to a scuffle between both sides, until the skulls smashed as they fell to the floor.

It was the controversy surrounding the cremation of  J Pappammal, 79, a woman from Trichy who died on July 8, that led to the fight between councillors. Pappammal was cremated at the Trichy crematorium. Her relatives grew suspicious when her ashes were handed over them in less than 10 minutes of her body being cremated. The workers told them that the machine is such that the body burns “quickly”.

However, refusing to believe their version, few family members forcefully entered the crematorium and opened a chamber where they found a partially-burnt body of Pappammal along with two others. The family members ransacked the crematorium and services were halted for almost two weeks.

Selvam said he was forced to bring human skulls to the meeting after the authorities refused to take action against officials who allegedly allowed crematorium workers to burn bodies together. “The gasifier was not working for long time. They used to keep ashes in a basket for instant distribution to families while the actual bodies were burnt together at night. There were even cases of officials allegedly sending partially-burnt bodies to the corporation’s garbage dumping yard. Only a CBI probe can find the truth… there are also allegations that even some bodies were not cremated and misused for monetary benefits,” he told.

Senior AIADMK leader denied the allegations. He said Selvam and another DMK members have been suspended from the next council meeting for the misconduct.
