Dikshit promises steps to allay fear of NE students

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit promised to initiate appropriate steps to allay security concerns of north-east people in the city.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit promised to initiate appropriate steps to allay security concerns of north-east people in the city even as students from the region held a demonstration protesting rising crime against them in the national capital.

Delhi is your city. It is as much yours as of anybody else’s. We will do everything possible to ensure your safety and security,” Dikshit told a group of students who were protesting against the recent attacks on women from the region.

The murder of a teenage girl from Nagaland last week allegedly by an IIT Phd scholar is snowballing into a major issue,triggering widespread protests by students from the region.

Yesterday,a delegation of the North East Students Organisation (NESO) had met Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi seeking his help in the wake of a number of attacks against women from the region staying in the city.

Several prominent parliamentarians from the Northeast have also come out in strong support to the students’ cause and said they will take up the issue of rising atrocities against students from the region with the Prime Minister soon.

Hundreds of students today protested against the “racial discrimination” and rising cases of violence against them in the city and later submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh demanding better security.
