A day after it granted actor Sanjay Dutt four weeks time to surrender, the Supreme Court on Thursday gave seven other convicts, including 70-year-old Zaibunnisa Anwar Kazi, the same amount of time to turn themselves in to serve their remaining sentences in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case.

The relief came on the day the deadline fixed for the surrender was set to end. “We will not deprive any person, entitled for the relief,of our similar order,” said a bench of Justices P Sathasivam and B S Chauhan.

Besides Zaibunissa, the others who have been granted more time are Abdul Razak Memon,Altaf Ali Sayed,Yusuf Mohsin Nulwalla,Issaq Mohd Hajwane,Shariff Abdul Gafoor Parker alias Dadabhai and Kesri Adajania. On Tuesday,a bench led by Chief Justice Altamas Kabir had dismissed separate writ petitions filed by Zaibunnisa,Hajwane and Parker seeking more time to surrender.

The bench today made it clear that it “will not allow extension for more than four weeks in any case”. All the eight convicts, including Dutt, will now have to surrender before the trial court in Mumbai by May 16. The bench, however, refused to grant relief to another convict,Yusuf Khan, who had sought extension of time till his review petition is decided by the Supreme Court.

The court had sentenced Zaibunnisa to five years in jail,Parker,Hajwane and Memon to life terms,Adajania to one year,Syed to 10 years and Nulwalla to five years.
