The Bombay High Court Tuesday issued notices to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the state government to file reply to a PIL seeking a probe by the NIA into the murder of anti-superstition activist Dr Narendra Dabholkar last month.
The court asked the state and the NIA to submit their affidavits in two weeks.
Former journalist Ketan Tirodkar had filed a PIL stating that the offence of Dabholkar’s murder was covered under Section 15 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and the NIA could, therefore,be directed to probe the case. The court had earlier said it would examine whether the stringent UAPA could be invoked in the case.
Accusing the Pune police of carrying out a flawed probe, the PIL says Dabholkar had been receiving threats for some time and the state government had no knowledge of that.
