A day after seven buffaloes were stolen from UP minister Azam Khan’s farmhouse in his native Rampur district, three policemen, including sub-inspector Sunil Kumar, were sent to Police Lines allegedly for dereliction of duty despite the fact that the force recovered five of the bovines.
Sub-inspector Sunil Kumar and constables Ajay and Vipin have been sent to Police Lines, said Superintendent of Police, Rampur, Sadhna Goswami.
Though Goswami refused to give details, sources in the police said the trio have been given the punishment posting for failing to prevent the bovine theft at the house of the minister who is considered number two in the UP Cabinet after CM Akhilesh Yadav.
Kumar was in-charge of the Ekta Tiraha police outpost, under which Pasiyapura village, where the farmhouse is located, falls. The two constables were attached with the outpost.
Meanwhile, working overtime, ever since the theft was reported Saturday morning, the police finally recovered five of the seven buffaloes. While two of the buffaloes were found in rural areas, others were recovered from different parts of the city, the police said.
However, no arrest has been made so far. Rampur SP Sadhana Goswami said sniffers dogs, Crime Branch sleuths and police teams from City Kotwali and Ganj police stations were assigned the job to trace the animals. They also raided slaughter houses and meat shops to collect clues about the stolen bovine, worth several lakhs of rupees.
“Sniffer dogs traced the hoof prints of the buffaloes to five villages. The police teams followed the prints to recover the animals,” she said adding efforts were on to trace the remaining two buffaloes.
Earlier, on Saturday, Raees, working as a help at Azam’s farmhouse, had lodged a complaint against unidentified persons at City Kotwali police station alleging that seven buffaloes were stolen in the early hours. The case was registered under IPC sections 380 (theft in dwelling house) and 457 (trepass, break-in).
Goswami and other officials rushed to the place soon after hearing about the complaint.
