A businessman who was reportedly heavily drunk and driving his car at 120 kmph hit two cars,killed one police constable and injured three others on Ferozepur road here on Tuesday night.
Karanvir Singh,who is in his 30s and said to be close to a SAD minister,was about to take a turn at high speed when his i20 hit a Swift,which had stopped at a police naka.
The Swift was being checked by a constable at that time. Karanvirs car hit the Swift,killing the constable on the spot. Then the i20 hit a Scorpio,which was also standing at the police naka for checking,and turned turtle,hitting the other three constables.
The deceased was identified as Manish Kumar (22). He was on his first night patrol duty. The three injured are Gurjant Singh,Kuldeep Kumar and Jaspal Singh.
Karanvir has been booked on charges of culpable homicide. Police commissioner PS Gill said,Although the driver was drunk,he did not kill the constable intentionally and hence he has not been booked for murder.
Karanvir ran away from the accident spot and hid in his house. The police arrested him from there. The accused,who also sustained injuries,has been admitted along with other police employees in DMCH.
Gill said Manish was cremated today in his village in Ferozepur and the police would provide all possible help to his family. Apart from compensation,a job will be given to a family member.
Describing the accident,Gurjant Singh said that while Manish was checking the Swift,Karanvirs car came and hit it at high speed. Manish tried to move away and hit the footpath. He died on the spot. Karanvirs car then hit the Scorpio and turned turtle,hitting the other constables.
Karanvir came out of the car and ran towards his house in Rajguru Nagar,which was nearby. However,the police soon nabbed him.
