Consider requests by Asaram case witnesses: SC

A PIL had sought a direction to police for providing “24-hour armed security to all prosecution witnesses in the Asaram case.”

The Supreme Court Monday asked trial courts in Rajasthan and Gujarat to appropriately consider requests for police protection made by the witnesses in the cases lodged against self-styled ‘godman’ Asaram.

A bench of Justice Anil R Dave and Justice Adarsh K Goel, while hearing a petition demanding CBI probe into the killing of the three witnesses — Amrut Prajapati, Akhil Gupta and Rahul Sachan, disposed of the PIL filed by Augustine Castelino, an NRI from New Zealand.

Castelino, in his plea, had sought a direction to police for providing “24-hour armed security to all prosecution witnesses in the Asaram case.”

The plea urged the court for a direction to constitute a high-level committee of security experts to assess the vulnerability of witnesses in the case.
