Congress Party has selected former MP and actor Raj Babbar as its nominee for the Rajya Sabha seat which was vacated after the death of Manorama Sharma Dobriyal. His name as the Congress nominee was reportedly cleared by the party high-command.
On being contacted on Tuesday morning, Surendra Agrawal, media in-charge in the Chief Minister’s Office, said Babbar will file his nomination papers. March 10 is the last date for filing the nomination papers.
The by-poll to fill the Rajya Sabha seat vacated after Maonorama’s death would be held on March 20. Manorama was elected to Rajya Sabha in November 2014.
Congress Party’s strength in 70-member Uttarakhand assembly is 35 and thus, Babbar is set to enter Rajya Sabha.
Progressive Democratic Front, which is a group of six non-congress MLAs, also support the ruling congress headed by Harish Rawat in the state.
