The Punjab Congress on Thursday urged the State Election Commission (SEC) and the government to immediately register criminal cases against SAD MLA Deep Malhotra and his son and cancel their liquor licenses for allegedly trying to corrupt and influence voters during the upcoming zila parishad and block samiti elections.
This comes after the excise and taxation department raided a Ludhiana godown of the MLAs son,Gaurav Malhotra, and recovered illegal stocks of 70,000 boxes of liquor boxes. The party has claimed that that though over two lakh boxes of liquor were found illegally stocked, the officials succumbed to pressure from Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and seized only 70,000 boxes.
The party also urged the SEC to direct all DCs to conduct raids on the liquor mafia, particularly politicians belonging to SAD and BJP,as they were planning to distribute liquor to voters in the upcoming elections.
The excise and taxation officials raided the godown on May 3,but did not take action against the culprits till May 6,giving ample time to Akali MLA to smuggle his stock out. Yet 70,000 boxes were seized on May 6,by Excise and Taxation Commissioner Kamalpreet Sandhu, who termed the entire stock illegal. As per law,no contractor can carry forward the stock of the previous financial year into the next year as auctions are done afresh in April, said Congress spokesman Sukhpal Singh Kahira.
