Flaying the murder of Punjab Youth Congress’ Patti block president,Sukhraj Singh Bhagupur,Leader of Opposition Sunil Jakhar on Thursday said his party will meet Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde to seek his intervention on law and order front.

The police, meanwhile, claimed to have arrested one of the three accused — brothers Sarwan Singh,Harcharan Singh and Sukha Singh — in the case. “Harcharan Singh had opened fire and he has been arrested,” Tarn Taran SSP Raj Jit Singh said.

While the police have booked the brothers, the Congress leadership had alleged that the accused are supporters of an Akali heavyweight. The police, however, had dismissed the same saying that the main accused,Sarwan Singh, was a “primary member” of Congress.

On Thursday,Jakhar and several other Congress leaders visited Bhagupur,Sukhraj’s village,a day after he was shot dead in front of the Bhagupur village gurdwara when he came there to pay obeisance with his father. Sukhraj was to set contest ensuing block samiti polls as a Congress candidate.

“I ask Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal that is this Punjab in Pakistan or Punjab in India?… It is high time for Badal sahib to take stock of the situation. The murder in the gurdwara where Sukhraj had gone to pay obeisance is not only condemnable, but also shameful. It is the most heinous thing when a person is murdered when he was praying,” Jakhar said.

Accusing the police of being complicit in Sukhraj’s murder,Jakhar said: “We will seek Union Home Minister’s intervention to address the law and order problem in Punjab. We will also take up the matter with the Governor.”

Jakhar alleged that Sukhraj was “singled out” by the police a night before his murder to force him to deposit his weapons. “…While police are forcing Congressmen to deposit weapons,Akalis are roaming freely with weapons,” he added.

The Tarn Taran SSP,however, denied the allegations. “Congress leaders are free to say whatever they want. The fact is that the weapons are being deposited as per norms and police have not been selective,” Singh said.

Meanwhile,Punjab Youth Congress president Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary, who was among those who attended Sukhraj’s cremation on Thursday, said five persons have been booked in the case. “The Youth Congress will gherao Badals if all the accused were not arrested within 48 hours,” he said.

Chaudhary maintained that accused Sarwan Singh “was sacked as block president of Congress from Patti by then PPCC chief Captain Amarinder Singh for his anti-party activities in 2012 Assembly polls”.

Chaudhary said Sukhraj was a dedicated soldier of the party. “He was at the forefront when last rites of Sarabjit Singh were performed. He was a popular leader and SAD feared he would win the polls. This is why he has been killed,” he added. Sukhraj is survived by his wife,a six year old daughter and a nine month old son.
