Claing credit for settling the issue of wealth tax in the interest of state’s peasantry, the Punjab Congress on Tuesday said it foiled the attempt of the SAD-BJP government to exploit the issue for political gains.

The party said it will attend the May 3 special Assembly session called by the government but the latter should pass a resolution thanking UPA for withdrawing the levy of wealth tax. Moreover, the government should announce the withdrawal of taxes levied by it,including property tax and hike in power tariff,at the session

“SAD has no face to show on the issue of wealth tax after Congress foiled its attempt to exploit it for political gains,” Congress chief Partap Singh Bajwa said, adding that SAD was forced to withdraw its district-level dharnas to divert the attention of people.

“I hope Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal will show statesmanship and magnanimity by bringing in unanimous resolution passed by house to thank UPA government and UPA chairperson on May 3,” he added.

Leader of Opposition Sunil Jakhar said his party will attend the special session but their only condition is the state government should have the courage to face criticism. “The CM called me and I have given my assurance that the party will attend the session. But if all they want to do is get accolades, then what is the point of holding a session after the issue has been resolved… Now,the agenda should be dropping the taxes they have imposed on people of Punjab,” he added.

Earlier,Punjab Congress spokesman Sukhpal Khaira, while addressing mediapersons, said: “If Bajwa can convince the UPA government to do away with wealth tax, what was preventing the CM from doing so? Is it not cheap politicking on such an sensitive issue? The over-anxious deputy CM as always jumped the gun.”

In a separate press statement, former chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh also hailed the withdrawal of wealth tax. Expressing his gratitude to Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda for leading a joint delegation of MPs and leaders to press for the demand,he said: “While Badal’s intentions were purely political,Hooda’s were genuine.”
