CM Prithviraj Chavan threatened Monday the government would invoke Maharashtra Essential Services Maintenance Act (MESMA) if striking teachers did not resume work in the next two days.

Members of Maharashtra Federation of College and University Teachers Organisation (MFUCTO) have been agitating for the past 96 days and have boycotted exam work to demand regularisation of lecturers who have not cleared NET/SET.

MFUCTO is also seeking Rs 1,500 crore in arrears.

The education department has agreed to release the arrears but regularisation of non-NET/SET teachers remains a sticky point. Officials claimed only 2,700 of the 45,000 teachers in the state were non-NET/SET.

The state has said it will regularise their services from the date of issue of a cabinet notification, not from the day of their joining. Further,CM said teachers who will be regularised will have to clear NET/SET in three years.
