The Chhattisgarh Police claimed to have recovered its first ever AK-47 during an anti-Maoist operation in Kanker district Wednesday. A senior Maoist, Jairam, who suffered injuries in the encounter, was also nabbed and sent to Raipur for medical treatment.
Kanker SP R N Dash said he received information about the presence of Maoists near Ghumsimunda village in Antagarh area in the morning. Subsequently, a joint team of the Kanker police and the BSF was sent to the spot where it had an encounter with the Maoists.
“The firing took place for 20-25 minutes. We later found Jayram with an AK-47. Since he was injured, we first admitted him to Antagarh hospital. We also tried to airlift him to Raipur, but due to bad weather it was not possible. We then sent him in a special ambulance,” Dash said.
“This is the first recovery of AK-47 in Kanker,” he added.
The Police have identified Jairam as the member of Kiskodo Area Committee of the CPI (Maoist).
