Chavan,Bahuguna discuss rescue ops

Even as 2,200 of the 2,949 tourists from Maharashtra have been rescued from flood-ravaged Uttarakhand,at least 150 are still untraceable

Even as 2,200 of the 2,949 tourists from Maharashtra have been rescued from flood-ravaged Uttarakhand,at least 150 are still untraceable. Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan reached Dehradun Monday and discussed rescue operations with Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna for those stranded in Badrinath and other adjoining towns. About 475 Maharashtra tourists are stranded at Badrinath.

An official from the Chavan office said he visited the control room at Haridwar. “The CM was camping at New Delhi for three days before reaching Dehradun for overall monitoring of the rescue operation,” the official said. Chavan had attempted to go to Dehradun Sunday but had to turn back due to inclement weather conditions.

Bahuguna informed Chavan that rescue teams would take another two to three days to evacuate flood victims at Badrinath as the roads leading to affected areas have been badly damaged and the only way to help people is through army helicopters. Over 4000 tourists in all are feared to have been trapped in Badrinath Valley. One helicopter which belongs to the state government is helping rescue operations in the area.

The state claimed that 487 persons were helped through the control room set up in Maharashtra Sadan in Delhi. 49 officials of Maharashtra are in Uttarakhand and control rooms have been set up in Dehradun,Haridwar,Rishikesh and New Delhi. While the state announced aid of Rs.10 crore for Uttarakhand,it has only released Rs 1 crore so far.
