Amidst cancelling of a number of shows, shying away of leading designers, celebrity showstoppers and buyers,a lacklustre Signature Premium Fashion Week Kolkata came to an end.

Although it was earlier announced that Bollywood designer Manish Malhotra would do the grand finale last night,Bangalore-based designer Manoviraj Khosla’s show turned out to be the first and the last one on the closing day.

Due to differences with the designers, the remaining shows were cancelled yesterday. Even on the inaugural day of the four-day affair, two or three shows were cancelled.

No buyers turned out at the fashion week which led to some exhibitors protesting at the venue on Saturday.

The organisers were forced to refund the money and close down the stalls.

The participation of some of the well-known city-based designers like Abhishek Dutta and Monapali, however, saved the face of the organisers.

But during Dutta’s show a city-based cinematographer walked the ramp uninvited alongside actress Rituparna Sengupta leaving everybody, including the cine star, shocked.

Besides actress Raima Sen,hardly anyone from Bollywood joined in as showstopper affecting the glam quotient of the event.

The fashion week’s director Yudhajit Dutta said their budgets have drastically dropped due to lack of interest shown by sponsors.

“We are trying our best to make it profitable. We hope that the next edition will be better,” he said.

The city’s tryst with fashion week began in 2009 when Yudhajit Dutta and Prateek Sen,then partners of Mindscapes Maestros Events & Sports Management, came up with the Kolkata Fashion Week (KFW).

After two editions,a rift between the two ensured the subsequent cancellation of the fashion blitzkrieg.

Both Dutta and Sen tried to hold separate fashion weeks in the city, but failed to stay put after making the initial announcements.

This year Dutta formed a new company Genesis Square and came up with the Signature Premium Fashion Week Kolkata.

Although it was billed as the return of the Kolkata Fashion Week after a gap of three years,at least two other fashion weeks have already been happening in the city but without attracting any eyeballs.

Idea Weavers has been organising the Kolkata Couture Fashion Week since 2010 while Pacific Entertainment Management came up with the Kolkata Fashion and Design Week last season.
