In a 24-hour operation carried out in two cities, the CBI Sunday busted a bribery racket allegedly involving senior Income-Tax officers in Chennai and Mumbai, chartered accountants acting as middlemen and businessmen seeking income-tax relief.
According to the CBI, four persons have been arrested so far,16 places searched and over Rs 1 crore recovered in cash and ornaments. The CBI has also seized 16 laptops, 13 CPUs, nine mobile phones, three iPads besides property papers and other incriminating documents.
The arrested accused have been identified as Salong Yaden, posted as Joint Commissioner I- Range 6 in Chennai, chartered accountants Sanjay Bhandari and Shreyas Bhandari and Hitesh Kawad, the MD of SPG & RG, a real estate firm in Chennai.
Several other senior Income-Tax officers from Mumbai and Chennai are under the scanner in the ongoing operation, the CBI said.
