Cabinet secretary asks states to ensure all swine flu helplines work

Health secretary B P Sharma said in the meeting that regular review of the situation in the affected states was being done through telephone and videoconferencing.

In a meeting of National Crisis Management Committee Thursday, to review the swine flu situation, Cabinet secretary Ajit Seth urged state governments to ensure round-the-clock functioning of outbreak monitoring cells and helplines. The total number of swine flu cases has crossed 11,000 with 703 deaths.

He also asked state drug controllers to ensure availability of necessary vaccines and to put in place vaccination and treatment protocols.

“The Cabinet secretary stressed that the states should ensure that the outbreak monitoring cells and necessary helplines function round-the-clock.

Chief secretaries and medical heads of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi briefed Seth about the availability of drugs, testing kits, diagnostic labs, personal protective equipment (PPE) and masks in their respective states.

Virus hit

A senior Jammu & Kashmir police officer died of “respiratory disorder” Thursday, causing panic as word spread that his throat swab had been sent to Delhi to test for swine flu. Sunil Gupta was posted as SP (administration) at the zonal police headquarters, Jammu.

Gujarat Assembly Speaker Ganpat Vasava was tested positive for swine flu on Thursday. Following the development, the Ministers’ Enclave in Gandhinagar was reportedly put on alert. CM Anandiben Patel’s residence is within 300m of Vasava’s bungalow.
