Shimla: Senior Himachal Pradesh IAS officer Padam Singh,who to retire this month,passed away in Chandigarh,after a brief illness,on Tuesday. He was 60. Born at Bair Ki Sair village in in Solan district in 1953,Singh was presently a special secretary. He has served as the deputy commissioner of Una and Sirmaur districts. Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh offered his condolences to the bereaved family.

HC dismisses plea against secretaries

CHANDIGARH: IN a significant development,the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday dismissed a bunch of petitions filed by hundreds of gram panchayat sewaks who had opposed the appointments of panchayat secretaries,made during the tenure of Haryana Chief Minister Om Parkash Singh Chautala. The petitioners had alleged that the Chautala regime had removed the asewaks and in their place appointed the panchayat secretaries. The petition was first dismissed by a single Bench in 2007 put the sewaks filed an appeal before a division bench in 2008. This was also dismissed on Tuesday.

Man held for killing grandmother in Jind

CHANDIGARH: The Haryana Police on Tuesday arrested a 23-year-old man for allegedly killing his grandmother. Police said Anil of Kila Jafargarh village in Jind district returned home in an inebriated state on Tuesdy afternnon. When his 85-year-old grandmother Dharmo Devi objected,he allegedly began to strangle her. According to police,Anil’s younger sister,who was present in the house,went to get help but before villagers could intervene,the youth had killed Dharmo Devi. He was nabbed by the villagers and handed over to police.

Two women booked for circulating MMS

CHANDIGARH: The Jind police on Tuesday booked two women of Talora Kheri village in the district for allegedly circulating an obscene MMS of a resident of the same village. According to police,a village resident lodged a complaint at the Pillukhera police station alleging that the two,Bimla and Sushma,had morphed her pictures and circulated an obscene MMS. They were also alllegedly blackmailing the victim.
