Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Wednesday urged the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Science and Technology Environment and Forest to empower the state authority to grant environmental clearances for minor mineral projects irrespective of their areas instead of present limit of 50 hectares. The demand was raised by Badal before the chairman of standing committee Dr T Subbarami Reddy,who called on Badal at his residence late Tuesday. Expressing concern over the inordinate delay in environment clearance for mineral projects of 50 hectares,Badal said that the state cases regarding this were still pending with the central authorities for the last six months despite his personal frequent requests to the Central ministers.
CM,deputy condole Uttamjit Kaurs death
CHANDIGARH: Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal,Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia on Wednesday deeply mourned the demise of Uttamjit Kaur (75),the wife of former chairman of the National Commission for Minorities,ex-MP Tarlochan Singh,who passed away at her residence on Wednesday morning after a brief illness. She is survived by her husband,a son and two daughters. She was the daughter of an eminent freedom fighter Akali Balwant Singh,who had spent 11 years in jail during the freedom struggle. The chief minister will attend the cremation in New Delhi.
Instruct colleges to follow anti-ragging norms
CHANDIGARH: Technical Education and Industrial Training Minister Anil Joshi on Wednesday issued strict instructions to all government and private Polytechnics and ITIs to get anti-ragging undertakings from students as well as their parents on the time of admission. He said that the students and parents can download the form from the UGC website http://www.antiragging.in and firstname.lastname@example.org. Joshi further directed the Technical Education Department to issue instructions to all the institutions to follow the Supreme Court guidelines in this regard. He said that strict action would be taken against the institution found violating the norms.
Punjab to commemorate Mahalanobis birth date
CHANDIGARH: The Punjab government will celebrate the National Statistics Day on June 29,the birth anniversary of Prof P C Mahalanobis,the founder of the Indian Statistical Institute. The event will be inaugurated by Finance Minister,Parminder Singh Dhindsa and will be held at the ICSSR Auditorium in Panjab University,Chandigarh,at 10 am.
RIMC entrance exams on Dec 1 & 2
CHANDIGARH: The entrance examination for admission to the Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC),Dehradun,for the July,2014,term would be conducted here at the Lala Lajpat Rai Bhawan (Sector-15) on 1st (Sunday) and 2nd (Monday) of December,2013. Disclosing this here,a spokesman of the Directorate,Sainik Welfare,Punjab,informed that only boys were eligible to apply for the admission. Candidates appearing for the test should not be born earlier than 2nd July,2001 and not later than January 1,2003 .
Punjab has 13,000 injecting drug users
CHANDIGARH: There are around 13,000 Injecting Drug Users (IDUs) in Punjab,of whom,10,600 are being covered at present through the Targeted Intervention programmes,Punjab Health Minister Madan Mohan Mittal said on Wednesday. He was speaking on the occasion of International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
