Third accused in gangrape case surrenders
Amritsar: The third accused in the alleged gangrape of a 20-year-old woman,Sanju Kumar alias Abhi,surrendered before police on Sunday. The development comes a day after two other accused – brothers Ajay Kumar alias Aditya and Sandeep Rana alias Rocky – were arrested. They were produced before a lower court on Sunday and have been remanded to police custody. Police,meantime,said that there was forcible sex with the victim,but she was not abducted. The girl had alleged that she was dragged into a car while returning from work and was gangraped by the three before being dumped.
State sets aside Rs 8 cr for poor students
Chandigarh: Aiming to impart free quality education to poor students of the state,the Punjab government has decided to provide Rs 8 crore as financial assistance in this regard from next month. On Sunday,Education Minister Sikandar Singh Maluka said that the SAD-BJP combine government was committed to provide quality education to the poor and weaker sections of the society. He said that the students studying in government school securing 80 per cent or more marks in matriculation examination would be given an annual assistance of Rs 30,000 for their two year senior secondary education (Class XI and XII) from April.
