Shanta Kumar had said Vyapam scam had dented Modi government’s image.

BJP veteran Shanta Kumar, who left his party red-faced by questioning the handling of the Vyapam scam, has come under attack from a sitting BJP MLA and former Punjab minister who has accused him of misappropriating election funds during the Lok Sabha polls last year.

Jalandhar Cantonment MLA Manoranjan Kalia Thursday alleged that Shanta did not maintain any accounts of the funds collected from Punjab for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Shanta was the BJP in-charge of the state during the polls.

In a letter to the BJP veteran, which he has uploaded on his Facebook page, Kalia claimed that huge amounts had been collected in the state. “It is in your nature to put others in an uncomfortable situation to project yourself as an honest and principled leader. During the 2014 elections, money was handed to you in Hoshiarpur. You initially handed over the money to a responsible leader of the Punjab BJP who assumed that it was to be given to (Union Minister) Vijay Sampla, the party candidate from Hoshiarpur Lok Sabha seat. After a few hours, however, you got the money back on the pretext that it was for your election and not for Hoshiarpur,” Kalia’s letter said. He went on to allege that Shanta, the MP from Kangra, had remained silent when asked about the amount in Delhi.

Kalia further said that since the Kangra MP has questioned the party’s functioning, he “should look into the same mirror that he was trying to show to others”. “Did you give details of the fund collection and expenditure to the party after the elections? A person who claims to be very principled and honest should have provided the details,” Kalia said.

In the two-page letter, Kalia also questioned the functioning of the Swami Vivekananda Research Centre in Palampur.

“Is it not true that the Swami Vivekananda Research Centre was constructed quickly when you were a union minister? To celebrate your birthday you collect funds through cheques for this centre. Is it not true that funds were given by officials, traders of your own department and isn’t the centre being controlled by your relatives and known persons,” he alleged.
