BJP MLA elected as speaker of JK Assembly

Gupta is an MLA from Gandhi Nagar constituency of Jammu district.

After coming to power in coalition with PDP first time in Jammu Jashmir, the BJP on Wednesday made yet another history with its first time MLA from Gandhi Nagar assembly constituency, Kavinder Gupta, getting elected unopposed as Speaker of the State Legislative assembly.

His name was proposed by Basharat Bukhari, PDP legislator from Valley and Minister for law justice and parliamentary affairs in Mufti Sayeed government. His name was seconded by Dy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh, who has been elected to the assembly for the first time from Billawar.

As the Protem Speaker Mohammad Shafi Uri put his name for voice vote, he got elected unopposed. Later cutting across party lines, members on both the treasury and opposition benches assured their support to him in smoothly running the house and hoped that he will do justice to them.

Later, addressing the house, speaker impressed upon the members to “stick to the basics of the constitution, the law, rules and the regulations”, saying that ” individual agendas always prove dangerous”. ” We have to work vigoirosly to reshape our state by way of inducing our minds cooperation and the element of live and let live”.

He also asked members to exercise “great restraint to cheap politicking at this juncture” and confine themselves to the true spirit of the constitutional obligations by resorting to self introspection and purification of thoughts.

” we need to keep ourselves on the toes to meet the challenges ahead of us and to realize dreams of people whose unrepresented, active and overwhelmed participation in the recently held elections despite threat perception to their lives serve us as a wake up call,” he added.
