A Muslim member of the BJP has alleged she was gangraped by seven men, part of a mob of over 20 who attacked her house in Chanho block of Ranchi district on Sunday night. She alleged the attack was politically motivated but police are treading cautiously in the case.

Police said initial medical test to confirm rape proved negative. All the suspects are Muslim.

Talking over the phone from Chanho, she alleged the men knocked at the window around 1 o’clock on Sunday night. “When my husband went to check, they pointed rifles and demanded he open the door,” she said.

“Two of them tied my husband and seven raped me,” she said adding they tore her teenage daughter’s clothes. She said she could identify around 12 of them, including the alleged rapists.

The woman, talking to this reporter in Saharsa over phone from Chanho, said she called the Imam of the village mosque and he alerted the locality.

“One of the accused is 62 years old. There are three generations from the same family. We are looking into facts of the case,” said Ranchi Senior Superintendent of Police Prabhat Kumar.

She said some local political leaders had been targeting her for sometime.

Ahead of elections, she had told this reporter, “We have been working in Chanho to ensure that Bandhu Tirkey does not get a single vote from the area.” Tirkey recently joined TMC and was a contestant for Ranchi Lok Sabha seat.

She had led an agitation against a nursing school in Chanho claiming the land was sacred to Muslims. “They troubled me with so many cases after that,” she said on Tuesday. She said her attackers also burned a vehicle. “They were planning to kill my husband…”

“I got hold of a mobile phone and called the Imam,” she said.

Police said the 12 named in the FIR presented themselves at police station. They were let off later. “They are not to leave the village during investigation,” said Kumar. He said there have been accusations and counter-accusations from both sides earlier and his team is treading carefully.
