Bihar gives nod to recognise third gender, to extend reservation benefits

Eunuchs, even those coming from upper castes, will be treated as OBC and will get reservation benefits.

The Bihar Cabinet has given nod to recognise eunuchs and transgenders as “the third gender” in view of the Supreme Court order to do so this April.

Eunuchs, even those coming from upper castes, will be treated as OBC annexture II (popularly called Extremely Backward Classes (EBCs) or Most Backward Classes (MBCs) and will get reservation benefits.

Bihar government Principal Secretary Brajesh Mehrotra said the Cabinet nod to recognise the “third gender” was given on Tuesday evening on a proposal from general administration department. He said eunuchs and transgenders from scheduled castes and scheduled tribes would reman in the same caste.
