Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray who turned 83 on Friday had a quiet birthday without his customary address to party workers in the wake of 26/11 terror attack and the agitation over the vexed border dispute over Belgaum.
Thackeray saheb has already appealed to workers not to celebrate his birthday with the usual enthusiasm in view of the terror attacks and boundary dispute, Sena spokesperson Neelam Gorhe said.
The Shiv Sena patriarch,who has handed over charge to his son Uddhav,has said time and again that his health was not the same as before and he would cut down on his public appearances. His public address was during the customary Dussera rally in October last.
He spent the whole day at Matoshree,his residence in suburban Bandra,with family members and senior party leaders including Manohar Joshi,Anant Gite,Sanjay Raut,Ramadas Kadam and Diwakar Raote.
His old friend and NCP chief Sharad Pawar telephoned him this morning to wish him. Among those who wished him on Friday were Deputy Chief Minister and former Sena leader Chhagan Bhujabal,Ambani brothers,Sachin Tendulkar,actress Jaya Bachchan and Maneka Gandhi.
The State Legislative Council Deputy Chairman Vasant Dawkhare and Rekha Mahajan,wife of slain BJP leader Pramod Mahajan were among the early callers at Thackeray’s residence.
