Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Partap Singh Bajwa Thursday blamed Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal for “shielding” criminal elements and said that “Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has become a sanctuary for murderers, gangsters, racketeers and land grabbers”.

Terming the killing of Sukhraj Singh Bhugupur,a Youth Congress leader and Congress party candidate in Block Samiti election,at his native village near Patti,as a “political murder”,Bajwa said,“SAD leaders are directly involved in murder of Sukhraj Singh and attack on Congress MLA Rana Gurmeet Singh Sodhi.”

He said it reflects that “there is no such thing as law and order in Punjab. The real threat to peace in the state is from the ruling party itself.”

He said that he has updated Congress president Sonia Gandhi, party vice president Rahul Gandhi and Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde on the issue. He said that Shinde has assured to take up the matter seriously.

PCC chief said that police was “working under pressure of ruling party to terrorise the Congress candidates”.

His younger brother and PCC general secretary Fateh Jung Singh Bajwa in a separate press statement said that Akali leaders were “bent on disturbing peace in Punjab”.

He held Badal responsible for the violence during block samiti and zila Parishad elections.
