Over 10 people die and more than 20 sustain injuries every day on in Haryana. This,according to a survey conducted by the All India Transporters Welfare Association,Congress MLA Sampat Singh said at the Haryana Assembly on Thursday.
Singh,who moved a calling attention motion on the issue of road fatalities,demanded that the state government implement stringent measures to curb accidents. “Out of the national average of 367 people dying in road accidents across the country,12 are from Haryana. The highest number of those dying on roads in Haryana are two-wheeler riders (25 per cent). While Gurgaon has the most unsafe roads with 462 deaths in 2012,Sonepat followed with 291 and Jhajjar with 271,” said Singh.
“The national average for accidental deaths due to unnatural causes,mainly on account of road mishaps,is 37.2 per cent against 46.9 per cent in Haryana,” Singh said.
Question Hour
Nuclear plant and power situation dominated the Question Hour of the Haryana Assembly on Thursday. While the government defended the nuclear plant coming up in Gorakhpur by stating that it was part of the “futuristic vision” of the ruling Congress,it also claimed that though Haryana was self-sufficient in power generation,to further strengthen its generation,various projects have been initiated to purchase power.
Replying to INLD MLA Krishan Pawar’s contention that nuclear plants could lead to radiation,Power Minister Capt Ajay Singh Yadav said: “…Radiation is nothing but a myth. All safety measures have been taken and the time has come to change our mindset. We cannot go on depending on coal and have to look for alternative sources of power generation.”
