Associated schools — those that function in small buildings — have been given two years to fulfil the building norms, else they would be shut down, announced Education Minister Sikander Singh Maluka on Thursday. Maluka said that 3,500 schools were operational in Punjab,of which those functioning in the building of 500-sq yard and above had been given a grace period of two years, while the schools being run in less than 500-sq yard buildings had been told to convert high schools into middle or even primary level schools, depending on the availability of space. Maluka was at the annual convocation of Government College for Girls where 1,100 girls were awarded degrees.
