The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to grant interim bail to self-styled godman Asaram Bapu on medical grounds in connection with a sexual assault case registered in Rajasthan.
The court, after going through a report prepared by medical college at Jodhpur, noted that there did not appear any urgency to release him and that he has been on medication for the last 15 months.
The court, however, said Asaram could be allowed to get treatment at an appropriate hospital in the National Capital Region after the material witnesses in the case had been examined. It asked the state government to file a report before October 15 on the opinion of the medical board and further asked Asaram’s counsel to give the names of the hospital where the surgery can be performed.
The apex court had in August directed setting up of a board of doctors to examine 76-year-old Asaram. It had earlier refused to entertain Asaram’s bail plea in a rape case lodged against him in Surat in Gujarat but agreed to hear his petition for bail in rape case filed in Jodhpur.
Charges have been framed against Asaram for rape, criminal conspiracy and other offences by a Jodhpur court in connection with alleged sexual exploitation of a minor girl in his ashram in Jodhpur.
