The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to grant bail to self-styled godman Asaram, who has been in custody in connection with a sexual assault case. The court accepted the medical report that had opined that Asaram did not require any urgent surgical procedure and his medical conditions could be monitored through outdoor treatment.
Rejecting the plea for bail made on medical grounds, a bench led by Justice T S Thakur also asked the trial court to expeditiously record statements of the material witnesses in the case. It is likely that Asaram will have to approach the trial court for his bail after the examination of relevant witnesses are over.
The bench had earlier set up a medical board of AIIMS to examine Asaram’s health and opine on the kind of treatment he required. The report said Asaram did not need any surgery and that medicines were sufficient to take care of his ailments.
