Even before the dust has settled on Trinamool Congress MP Tapas Paul’s ‘rape and kill’ remark, another TMC functionary has sparked a controversy with similar comments.
MLA Deepak Haldar, at a rally late on Wednesday evening at Diamond Harbour in South-24 Parganas, said: There was rape earlier, there is rape today. As long as the earth exists, there will be rape.”
Describing rape a social malady, he said Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee alone cannot do anything to prevent it.
What he said next was equally outrageous. “I find astonishing that after living together for seven years, a woman is now claiming she was raped all these years. She has been extracting money from that man during this time, and now when he has no more money she is alleging rape.”
The rally was organised to protest against another rally organised on August 28 by Akranto Amra — a forum formed by those who have “suffered at the hands of the administration in the TMC regime”.
