A court in Mizoram’s Mamit district on Thursday issued a warrant of arrest against Bru leader A Sawibunga for failing to appear before it in an ongoing defamation case in spite of two earlier summons.
A Sawibunga is president of the Mizoram Bru Displaced People’s Forum, the main group representing internally displaced Bru tribals in six relief camps in Tripiura.
The Mamit sub-headquarters of the Young Mizo Association had last month filed a defamation case against the Bru leader for allegedly telling a national newspaper that several houses belonging to Bru tribals in western Mizoram had been set on fire by Mizo tribesmen, leading to an exodus into Tripura.
Police have said there were no such incidents of violence even as Sawibunga has said the newspaper published a report quoting him when he had not spoken to any representative of the newspaper.
The Mamit District court had fixed the first hearing for the defamation case on July 21, but Sawibunga had not turned up.
He was summoned again for another hearing fixed for Thursday and, according to the arrest order, court staff had called him on the telephone besides sending him an official summons.
When he again did not turn up at the hearing Thursday, the court issued a warrant and directed the Mamit Police Station to take him into custody.
