Two persons were killed on the spot and a woman seriously injured when an army jawan opened fire from his service weapon at Mission Chariali in the heart of Tezpur town, not far away from the Army’s Four Corps headquarter, late on Sunday night.
Army sources said the jawan who belonged to the 12 Assam Rifles, allegedly got into a scuffle with the civilian persons in his personal capacity and fired from his service weapon leading to the death.
The jawan, identified as Karnail Singh Kapoor, has been taken into custody by the police and a case registered.
The incident has no relation to the on-going counter-insurgency operations in which the army is also a part, Guwahati-based army PRO Lt Col Suneet Newton said.
Meanwhile, the army on Monday apprehended seven hardcore KPLT militants in an operation carried out in Karbi Anglong district, taking the number of apprehended militants in the two-day operation to nine.
Altogether four AK-series weapons, two pistols, one greande launcher, over 23,00 rounds of ammunition,extortion notes, a stock of ration, clothing and medicine were also recovered from the hideout that was busted during the operation.
