A jawan was killed in a failed infiltration bid in
Keran Sector along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir,Army sources said on Friday.
S Patil,a jawan of 15 Rashtriya Rifles,was injured when infiltrating militants opened fire on Army troops,who laid an ambush near the LoC at Sundernali in Keran ,they said.
Sources said the army personnel retaliated,forcing the militants to flee to the other side of LoC.
Patil was shifted to a medical unit where he succumbed to injuries,the sources said.
Eight militants were killed in the fortnight-long anti-infiltration operation in Keran Sector which was called off on October 8.
The infiltration attempts continued in the Valley even as Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire for the third time in less than 24 hours. The trops shelled mortars and fired on forward areas along the LoC in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir.
In a parallel development,alert policemen on Friday foiled an attempt by militants to snatch their weapons in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir.
A group of militants barged into a police picket,established for protecting the minority community living in Koil village of Pulwama district,and tried to snatch the weapons of the cops posted there,police said.
