Just over three years after taking charge, Vice-Chancellor of the Allahabad University (AU) Prof Anil Kumar Singh has tendered his resignation to the President, who is also the Visitor of the Central University. Singh had taken over as V-C on July 24, 2011.
While a formal order on the resignation is yet to be received, Prof N R Farooqui has been appointed the acting V-C.
Singh sent in his resignation letter Monday evening and a copy of the same was forwarded to Prof B P Singh, who has the additional charge of Registrar. “He has cited personal reasons for taking the step,” B P Singh said.
The students, teachers and the non-teaching staff (NTS) welcomed the decision by Singh whom they accused of “taking arbitrary decisions” and being “strictly averse to communication”.
The resignation came two days after the NTS strike that began July 9 ended July 28. On July 27, the VC had met the NTS and assured to take action on their demands pertaining to welfare measures in a meeting of the Executive Council in the first week of August. The NTS strike has jeopardised the onset of the new academic session, sources said. Full-fledged teaching in the new session may be delayed by around two to three months, they said.
“Prof N R Farooqui held a meeting with the Deans and other senior officials requesting them to carry on with admission process and initiate teaching at the earliest,” said an official spokesperson.
But, sources said, with the undergraduate admission results still getting declared and enrolment yet to begin, actual teaching may be late by around three months.
