A nine-year-old girl was allegedly raped and left to die in a field under the Jhunsi police station area of Allahabad late on Saturday evening. The body of the girl was recovered on Sunday morning and two accused, named in an FIR by the victim’s uncle, were arrested late Sunday night.

According to the police, the incident came to light on Sunday morning when people noticed a pair of slippers lying in a field at Badra village, about 5 km from the Jhunsi police station. They then found the body of the girl lying in a pool of blood with serious injuries to her private parts. A packet of chewing tobacco was found at the spot. On investigation, it was learnt that the girl had gone missing Saturday evening. Her uncle had asked her to fetch a sachet of chewing tobacco from a nearby shop around 7.30 pm. When she did not return for a long time, her uncle sent her elder sister to look for her. She too was unable to trace the girl. The family then launched a search operation in the village but to no avail.

Subsequently, the uncle of the girl lodged an FIR against two persons: Baba Yadav (19) and his friend and neighbour Bhunne Yadav (23). “Both the accused have been arrested. Prima facie, it does not appear that they had planned the attack. Further investigation is on,” said Circle Officer (Daraganj), Alka Bhatnagar.

“The post-mortem has not revealed any evident cause of death. It, therefore, appears that the girl died due to excessive bleeding after rape. The post-mortem has confirmed rape. It is possible that the accused may have put their hands on her mouth to prevent her from raising an alarm. So far, there is no evidence of the accused having any sort of enmity with the victim’s family… While investigations are on, it seems quite possible that they spotted the girl alone and decided to attack her,” said Station Officer Jhunsi police station, Kallu Ram Bharti.
